![]() ![]() Several composers have worked on finishing the two symphonies. Schubert lived only a few weeks more after he started this large work. It is a full symphonic work, laid out to be orchestrated in the future. By the way Schubert just simply never got back to the “unfinished” no reason is given among his letters or other available info. The melody and bass are written out as well as instructions for counterpoint. 8, is more finished as far as the orchestration is concerned, but there are only two movements. 7 is not listed whenever his symphonic output is mentioned. And for the record, most of us say he composed 9 Symphonies. The paragraph above is just to give you a brief look at Schubert’s amazing range of compositions. How about two works about fish specifically, trout? (Hint: They are a Lied that warned young women not to be caught by “angling youths” and a Piano Quintet with variations based on the melody of the song as its 4th Movement.) Do you play the piano? Do you know any short amazing works called Impromptus? And finally how about a most beloved setting of Ave Maria? Now you must know who the composer is: yes, it is Franz Peter Schubert. (Gr: plural for art songs songs usually for solo voice and piano accompaniment with poetry as the text) Not just some songs how about over 600 of them? Do you know the Erlkönig, the terrifying song about a child who sees a supernatural being that his father cannot see? A scary poem by Goethe is the text for this famous Lied. You may also immediately think of a writer of Lieder. Ah, you say, he must be the composer of the Unfinished Symphony. He died at age 31 after several years of illness. His music also often reveals his sense of his short time on earth. By contrast, he left an enormous legacy of music, some 1,500 pieces in so many genres. This week I speak of another composer gone too soon. ![]() I spoke of his premonition of early death. ![]() The French composer left a very small catalogue of works behind.
